Injuries don’t always happen on the road or while working on the job. In fact, many of them occur right in our own homes, especially when it’s time to move. At All Edgewater Movers, we’re a professional team of expert movers that keeps New Jersey residents safe during moving season. While we have an array of state-of-the-art equipment to help our moving crew relocate your items safely, we understand that our customers may have some items they prefer to pack themselves.
To prevent injuries during the packing process, we recommend our customers keep the following guidelines in mind:
Lift the Right Way
Moving day isn’t the time to show off those biceps you’ve been working on. Even the strongest professional mover knows that lifting is all about using your legs to support you. Never lift with your back. Instead, ensure you are as close as possible to the item you’re trying to move and then squat down close to the ground. Bend your knees and lift slowly, preventing yourself from twisting or turning while you do so.
Lower Boxes Carefully
Lifting isn’t the only time you can strain a muscle or tendon. Lowering boxes safely is just as important. Don’t just bend over and drop the item. Instead, keep yourself close to the item and carefully bend your legs, just as you did when lifting. Gently bring the item to the floor as you squat down, remembering not to twist your back.
Fuel Your Body
Keep in mind that a nourished body can better protect you against strains and sprains. While you don’t want to overdo it with the breakfast right before you start your moving “workout,” eat a sensible meal to keep yourself full of energy. Drink water regularly, setting a reminder on your phone if you need to. It’s easy to get dehydrated in the midst of the moving chaos, but too little water can make you lightheaded.
Wear the Right Clothing
Moving can be a messy job, especially if you’re moving dusty attic objects or boxes of art supplies. You’ll want to wear stretchy clothing that you don’t mind getting stained, but make sure those pants and shirts aren’t too loose, or they may be more of a hindrance. Wear shoes with a suitable grip so your feet don’t slip out from underneath you, especially on wet stairs or on metal ladders.
