From an apartment to a house
For many families, Englewood is the step from a city apartment to a house with a yard and a driveway. The move usually starts in a Manhattan or Brooklyn building with an elevator and a doorman, and it ends at a house with stairs, a basement and a garage. Two very different ends, one day.
Englewood itself is varied. Downtown, around Palisade Avenue, has shops, restaurants, apartment buildings and condos. The east side rises toward the cliffs, with large older homes on wide lots. The rest of town mixes single-family houses, two-family homes and garden apartment complexes. Route 4 and local roads link Englewood to the George Washington Bridge, the usual crossing for a move from Manhattan, the Bronx or Queens.
A week-by-week plan for a family move
Six to eight weeks out
Book your free estimate. For a city apartment, a video walk-through works well if you open every closet. Pick a date: if children are changing schools, a school break or early summer keeps the first weeks calmer.
Four weeks out
Decide what the house needs and what it does not. Everything you keep has to be packed, carried and unpacked, so sell or donate what you will not use. If your closing date and your lease end do not line up, plan storage now.
Two weeks out
Get the city building’s move rules: elevator booking, hours and the COI. We issue the COI and send it with your contract. Order packing materials, or book our packers for the whole home or only the kitchen and fragile rooms.
The last week
Pack one box for each child with sheets, a night light and a favorite toy. Put kitchen basics in a box you will open first. Check that a truck can reach the new driveway, and move your own car out of the way on the day.
Moving day
The crew loads at the city building inside its elevator slot, crosses the bridge and unloads at the house. Ask us to set up the beds first, so everyone can sleep that night.
When the closing date and the lease do not match
Buying a house rarely lines up neatly with a lease. We can move your things out on the day your lease ends, keep them in short-term storage through affiliated, clean, secure self-storage facilities, and deliver them on a scheduled date after the closing. Long-term storage works the same way if a renovation runs late.
How pricing works: your hourly rate and terms are in writing before moving day, and the total follows the actual hours. If you add items or services, we confirm the change in writing first.
What often comes with a house move
- A piano. We move uprights and grands.
- Art and mirrors that need a crate rather than a box.
- Outdoor furniture, grills, bikes and a lawn mower. Drain the fuel from a gas mower before moving day.
- Beds and cribs to take apart in the apartment and put back together in the house.
