We move upright and grand pianos, including makers like Steinway, Baldwin and Bösendorfer.
A piano is heavy, its weight sits high or to one side, and it breaks if tipped or dragged the wrong way. It can move alone, as part of a local move, or across the Hudson.
How a grand piano moves
- The crew measures doors, stairs and elevator at both ends.
- The lid is closed and secured; the pedal lyre and legs come off.
- The piano goes on its straight side on a padded board, wrapped and strapped.
- It rolls to the truck, rides strapped, and goes back on its legs in the new room.
How an upright moves
An upright stays on its feet. The crew wraps it, sets it on a dolly, and rolls it upright. On stairs, they move it one step at a time with straps.

Pianos in towers and walk-ups
In a tower, the piano rides the service elevator, so its inside size matters. In a walk-up, the staircase decides: width, turns and railings. If a piano cannot pass a staircase or door safely, we tell you before moving day, not halfway up the stairs.
Get the room ready
Pick the new spot away from radiators, heating vents and direct sun. Clear rugs and plants from the path, and keep pets and children away.
After the move
A move shifts a piano’s tuning. Technicians usually suggest a few weeks to settle before tuning. We move pianos; tuning is a technician’s job.
