Most moves leave something behind: a worn sofa, a mattress, an old air conditioner, a TV. Each town along the Palisades has its own rules for these items. Plan them two or three weeks before moving day. Many pickups need an appointment, and towns can fine people who put items out on the wrong day or leave them in the wrong place.
In an apartment building, start with the management office. Fort Lee’s public works page says it directly: apartment buildings may have their own rules for trash, recycling and bulk items.
Fort Lee
- Furniture and mattresses: your bulk day is the second garbage pickup day of the week. Two bulk items at most; anything more will not be taken.
- Appliances (refrigerators, stoves, washers, dryers, dishwashers, hot water heaters): call the borough’s hauler, Interstate Waste Services, at 1-866-342-5497 to schedule a pickup.
- Electronics and computers: bring them to the Department of Public Works at 530 Jane Street. Electronics and computers only: no appliances, air conditioners, vacuums or microwaves.
- Questions: Department of Public Works, 201-592-3632.
Edgewater
- Furniture goes out with regular garbage, collected Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Put it at the curb after 8 p.m. the night before. Household appliances are not part of garbage pickup.
- Computers and electronics, meaning anything with a cord, including microwaves and TVs, are collected on Fridays along with white goods. Call 201-943-1700, ext. 5005, for an appointment.
- Renovation debris must be removed by the contractor or a private carting firm. A roll-off container in front of your home needs a permit from the Building Department.
Cliffside Park
- Mattresses and box springs must be wrapped in plastic before the Department of Public Works will pick them up.
- Garbage days depend on your part of town: Monday and Thursday, Tuesday and Friday, or Wednesday and Saturday. Check the borough’s Public Works page and recycling calendar for your street.
- Questions: Department of Public Works, 201-943-3675.
Palisades Park
- Bulk trash day: Thursday on the north side (north of Brinkerhoff Avenue to Oakdene Avenue) and Friday on the south side (all of Brinkerhoff Avenue and south to Harriet Avenue). Two to three items only, such as furniture, a sofa, a mattress or carpet bundled and tied in pieces 3 feet or shorter. No property cleanouts.
- Mattresses must be wrapped.
- TVs, appliances, computers, electronics and metal: by appointment only, Monday to Friday. Call the Department of Public Works at 201-585-4133 between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. Refrigerator doors must be removed. Water heaters need proof of a permit from the Building Department.
- Bathtubs, sinks, toilets and other construction materials are not picked up; you arrange their removal yourself.
- Garbage goes to the curb after 5:30 p.m. the night before pickup.
Englewood Cliffs
- Bulk items: put them at the curb, then call the Department of Public Works for pickup. No hazardous waste or construction debris.
- Garbage: Monday and Thursday south of Palisade Avenue, Tuesday and Friday north of it, at the curb by 7 a.m.
Fairview, Ridgefield, Leonia and North Bergen
Days and limits differ by town and change from year to year. Check the town’s public works page or call its Department of Public Works before you put anything out.
Paint, propane and other hazardous items
Paint, aerosol cans, pesticides and solvents should not go in the trash. Bergen County residents can bring them to free household hazardous waste collection days run by the Bergen County Utilities Authority (BCUA); the Edgewater, Fort Lee and Palisades Park pages all point there. Propane is a special case on moving day: the Port Authority bans it in the Lincoln and Holland tunnels and on the lower level of the George Washington Bridge. Ask us before you pack anything flammable.
A simple plan
- Three weeks out: walk through the home and mark what stays behind. Measure big pieces against the new home, so you do not move a sofa that will not fit.
- Two weeks out: book appliance and electronics pickups so they come before moving day.
- Moving week: put bulk items out only on your town’s bulk day, within its limits.
- Moving day: show the crew what stays, so nothing you meant to leave ends up on the truck.
Leaving things behind also makes the move smaller, and your final cost depends on how much you move. With our packing services, we pack only what you keep. More about moves in Fort Lee, Edgewater, Cliffside Park and Palisades Park.
Common questions
Can I leave old furniture in my building’s trash room?
Only if management allows it. Apartment buildings may have their own rules for bulk items, so ask the management office first.
How many bulk items can I put out?
It depends on the town. Fort Lee takes up to two bulk items on its bulk day. Palisades Park takes two to three.
What do I do with an old TV or computer?
In Fort Lee, bring it to the Department of Public Works at 530 Jane Street. In Edgewater and Palisades Park, call public works for a pickup appointment.
