Just over the bridge

The George Washington Bridge lands in Fort Lee. For anyone leaving Washington Heights, Inwood or Harlem, that makes Fort Lee the town directly across the river. From Midtown and downtown the choice is less obvious, because the Lincoln Tunnel and a drive north along the cliff can beat the bridge at some hours. Getting a truck to the bridge

A moving truck cannot use the Henry Hudson Parkway, because parkways are closed to commercial vehicles. So from the Upper West Side or Midtown, the truck takes the avenues north to the bridge approach, or it heads for the Lincoln Tunnel instead. The approaches back up at rush hour and before holiday weekends, and a loaded truck is slow in traffic. That is why we plan the start time with care.

Co-op on both ends

Many buildings in upper Manhattan and on the Fort Lee cliff are co-ops, and a co-op adds a step: the board. Buyers need board approval before they can close and set a move-in date. Sellers still follow their building’s move-out rules. With a co-op at each end, you answer to two boards and two managements. This order keeps the dates from colliding:

1. As soon as you have a contract: ask both buildings for their move rules in writing.
2. After board approval: fix the moving date. Not before.
3. Two to three weeks out: book the freight elevator in both buildings and send us both COI requirements. We issue both COIs and send them with your contract.
4. The week before: confirm the times with both front desks, and tell the Fort Lee building which entrance the crew will use.
5. Moving day: we load in Manhattan, cross, and unload in the slot the Fort Lee building gave you.

If Fort Lee means a house

West of the cliff, Fort Lee has two-family houses, single-family homes and garden apartments with parking lots. A move from a Manhattan apartment to a house usually brings more rooms than furniture. That is fine: price the move on what you own now, not on what the house will hold later. A house move can also bring a piano; we move uprights and grands. • Storage cages and bike rooms emptied, or listed for the crew.
• A start time outside the bridge rush, if your buildings allow it.
• Your parking at the new building sorted out before the truck arrives.
