A short crossing with two sets of rules
On a map, Manhattan to Hoboken hardly looks like a trip. The river is narrow, and a tunnel carries the truck under it. The real work happens at the two doors. Many Manhattan moves start in a doorman building with a service elevator and a booked slot. Many Hoboken moves end on the third or fourth floor of a brownstone with no elevator at all. Which tunnel, usually
From downtown, the Village and Tribeca, the truck usually takes the Holland Tunnel. It comes up in Jersey City, just south of Hoboken. From Midtown, the Lincoln Tunnel usually makes more sense: it comes out in Weehawken, right on Hoboken’s northern edge. Both tunnels have height limits, and traffic on the approaches changes by the hour, so we pick the crossing for your date and start time. The Manhattan end: the building sets the terms
In a doorman building, management decides when and how you leave. Ask for the move-out rules as soon as you give notice:
- The days and hours when moves are allowed, and whether weekends are open.
- How to book the service elevator, and for how long.
- The exact names the COI must show. We issue the Certificate of Insurance (COI) and send it with your contract; you forward it, or we send it to the building on request.
- Where the truck should stop: a side entrance, a loading area or the street out front.

The Hoboken end: stairs, stoops and curb space
Hoboken is a tight grid of brownstones and brick rowhouses, with newer elevator buildings along the waterfront and on the west side of town. Many blocks are one-way, narrow and parked on both sides. That shapes three things on moving day.
- Where the truck stands. Hoboken has its own process for holding curb space for a moving truck. Ask the city early about your block and date, and tell your neighbors.
- What fits up the stairs. A sofa that rode a freight elevator in Manhattan may not make a brownstone turn. Measure the staircase and the landings before you decide what comes along.
- How the crew works. A walk-up takes more carrying than a tower. We size the crew for the flights you describe, and we take apart beds, tables and desks that need it.

Who makes this move
Often it is Manhattan renters who want more room and still want a short ride back by PATH train or ferry. Some are families who want a park nearby and a quieter block. A job in Midtown or a job downtown often decides which end of Hoboken they choose, because the PATH runs to both.

Manhattan to Hoboken questions
Does crossing into New Jersey make this a federal interstate move?
It crosses a state line, but federal rules treat New York City and the nearby New Jersey towns, Hoboken included, as one commercial zone. The federal household goods rules for long-distance moves do not apply to a move like this. For you, the written price works the same way as on any move.
Can you move me on a Saturday?
Yes, if both buildings allow it. Weekends and holidays cost nothing extra. Some Manhattan buildings allow moves only on weekdays, so check there first.
What if my sofa will not fit up the Hoboken stairs?
Send photos and measurements before moving day. Many sofas come apart or lose their legs. If a piece still cannot make the turn, we tell you in advance, so you can sell it, store it or plan another way.
Do I need a COI for each building?
If both buildings ask for one, yes. We issue a COI with the names each building gives you and send them with your contract.
